The festive season can be a joyful time filled with celebrations, family gatherings, and togetherness. However, for people living with disabilities who may not have family support, Christmas can be a harsh reminder of loneliness and isolation.

Whether you’re an NDIS provider, support worker, friend, or simply a concerned member of the community, it’s important everyone understands and helps to addresses the challenges of loneliness during the holiday season.

What challenges do people with disabilities face at Christmas?

People with disabilities can face unique challenges during the holidays. The hustle and bustle of the festive season can be overwhelming, and the emphasis on family gatherings can only worsen feelings of loneliness for those without close family ties.

Other challenges felt during this time could include:

  • Limited mobility and accessibility concerns makes it difficult to participate in festive activities or travel to events.

  • Sensory overload from bright lights, loud music, and large crowds can cause stress and anxiety.

  • Changes in routine and unfamiliar social interactions can be particularly challenging.

  • Difficulty understanding or engaging in holiday traditions and social cues can lead to feelings of exclusion.

  • Increased stress, anxiety, or depression during the holiday season due to social isolation or strained family relationships.

How communities can support people with disabilities

Community support plays a vital role in combating loneliness during Christmas. Not-for-profit and charity organisations, such as Beyond Blue, are important this time of year for the services they offer to individuals struggling with loneliness.

Local community centres often host holiday events and activities that bring people together. Volunteering at events or centres can be a fulfilling way to connect with others and contribute positively.

Making a donation to a Christmas drive, or even simply checking in on others can also make a big impact.
